A no-go thread plug gauge is a test gauge used to check whether a thread is within the maximum permissible dimensions (limits) – both in terms of outer diameter and fit.
The nominal diameter is the diameter specified as the standard dimension for a thread – for metric threads, "M8" means a nominal diameter of 8 mm.
The notch effect describes the local stress concentration at notches or sharp transitions in material – e.g. at thread roots, sharp flanks or lead-in and runout zones.
